#AV and Education: A Continuing Partnership

Speaker: David Labuskes, CTS, RCDD

In today’s rapidly changing and evolving world of education delivery models, technology solutions and generational shifts, AV can be an important differentiator for the organization that embraces and integrates it into their strategy.

Speaker Bio:
David Labuskes is Executive Director and CEO of InfoComm International, the trade association representing the commercial audiovisual trade association. He has been leading the organization since January 2013.

Prior to joining InfoComm, Dave served as vice president of RTKL, now a division of ARCADIS, a leading architectural and engineering firm. He was the founder of the company's Technology Design Practice, overseeing the delivery of audio/visual, voice, data, wireless, environmental media, electronic security and acoustics services. Responsible for the operational, financial and marketing of technical services globally, Dave has led projects in the corporate, government, commercial and health care spaces.

Previously, Dave served as President and CEO of Premier Technology services, a software and systems design consulting firm, and was Executive Vice President of Accelerated Payment Systems, an electronic payments processing firm.

Dave earned a BA in International Politics and Business from Penn State University, and an MBA from Loyola University of Maryland.

Through storytelling, mini-lecture, and media presentation, Participants will:

cultural values influence personal behaviors and attitudes.
• Be made aware of the different ways in which people prefer to work and
• Explore how fear stifles growth.
• Be shown that mutual respect is at the heart of effective communication.

Speaker Bio: Kelli McLoud-Schingen is President and principal facilitator of KMS Consulting. She specializes in Inclusive Leadership, Global Diversity and Inclusion, Storytelling, Cultural Competence, Conflict Resolution/Mediation, Change Management, and Teambuilding. She has facilitated development workshops, trainings and dramatic presentations for educational, non-profit, government and corporate institutions in the USA and internationally since 1989.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Aurora University and a Master of Arts in Cross-Cultural Studies from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. Additionally, she is a qualified administrator for the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), a cross-cultural development measurement tool as well as a certified professional mediator.

As a keynote speaker for the Midwestern University Campus Tour, Gerry will discuss bridging the owner’s needs to the plans designed by the architect, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, and information systems engineer. Through a discussion of construction projects, a media presentation, and a Q&

A session, participants will:

• Learn about the typical construction process from the consultant’s
• Hear tips on how you, the owner, can best provide information to a design team in order to achieve expected outcomes.
• Understand when to provide information to the design team during the design and construction process.

Speaker Bio: Gerald Katafiasz is an Electrical Engineer at LSW Engineers, an Arizona based Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical architectural engineering company. He is a registered Professional Engineer in multiple states and a BiCSi Registered Communication Distribution Designer (RCDD). Gerald has spent over 30 years designing electrical systems; specializing in community antenna television distribution, security/access control, paging, fire alarm, telecommunication cabling, and integration of multi-media systems. Over the past 20 years Gerry has seen a growing need to provide building designs that integrate tomorrow’s technology with today’s systems. In order to integrate the media/technology in today’s building, Gerry realizes the importance of understanding the owner’s media/technology concepts by assisting with bridging the gaps between owner and design team.

Managing Collaboration When You're NOT in Charge

Speaker: Gary Larson, Dean of Information and Technology, Wheaton College

Campus Tour Presentation for Wheaton College. At most colleges and universities, technology providers are spread among multiple organizational units: IT Services, Media Resources, Library, Faculty Teaching and Learning Centers, Distance Learning, to name just a few. Effective collaboration and coordination among all of the various units becomes a perennial issue. Even those institutions that attempt to consolidate all of their technology functions under a single cabinet level CIO often find that collaboration within and between all of the units reporting to the CIO remains problematic because of the significant differences in the organizational cultures and missions of each of the units. This issue is particularly poignant for Academic and Media Technology professionals who are often called on to coordinate the design and provision of services in Smart classrooms and the interface with a campus LMS and/or Distance Learning initiatives even though organizationally they are rarely at the apex of the relevant org chart. This presentation will focus of strategies that institutions and AMT professionals can adopt to provide effective collaboration as well as challenges that are often confronted. After a short presentation, the session will focus on Q&A and dialogue.

Speaker Bio: Gary Larson has been the Dean of Information and Technology at Wheaton for seven years after having filled a number of other faculty and administrative roles during a 30-year tenure at Wheaton. As a faculty member he maintained an interdisciplinary portfolio, teaching courses in a wide range of departments in both the humanities and the sciences. Prior to becoming a dean, Gary served as the Director of Wheaton’s Interdisciplinary Studies program as well as the Director of its minor in Cognitive and Neurosciences. After receiving a BA in History from Crown College, an MA in Theological Studies from Wheaton College, and an MA in Communication Studies from Arizona State University, Gary received his PhD in Linguistics from the University of Chicago, focusing his research on Natural Language Processing and Artificial Intelligence.
