 President-Elect Candidate - James Pierret, Carleton College

As a member of the Presentation, Events, and Production Support (PEPS) team at Carleton, Jim wears many hats. His primary responsibility is the project management of audio visual installation throughout campus, such as overseeing the commissioning of Carleton’s new Music and Performance Commons, which was completed this fall, and managing the AV aspects of the construction of a new science center addition currently underway. He also serves as the lead technician for the maintenance of the equipment in the 180 rooms (Classrooms, labs, conference rooms, dance studios, etc.) with installed presentation technologies. He also works with event setups, the loaner pool, and digital signage, as well as being the campus AMX programmer.

He earned a BS in Psychology from St. John’s University in Minnesota, a BA in Geography from the
University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Minnesota State University –
Mankato. He has been at Carleton since 1996 after serving a year on a MSU-M faculty after completing
his masters
 
STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I am interested in serving as President-Elect of CCUMC because I would like to continue to give back to this great organization. Throughout my career in media, CCUMC has been a great resource for information, networking, collaboration, commiseration, and inspiration. As president, I want to continue the efforts of those before me to ensure that CCUMC stays the number one professional organization for college and university media and AV professionals.

I became a member and attended my first CCUMC conference in 1998 at Santa Cruz. Since then I have attended 15 other conferences including this year’s at Notre Dame. I look forward to the conference every year. I have presented four times and was a member of two different panel discussions. I served two terms as a director on the CCUMC Board. While on the board, I was chair of the Constitution and Bylaws task force. I also serve as the Chair of the Small Institutions Interest Group, I was a member of the Classroom Design Award task force, and I served a term on the Membership Committee.

Secretary - Anthony Helm, Dartmouth College

Anthony Helm is Head of Digital Media and Library Technologies in the Dartmouth College Library, leading the Jones Media Center and the Digital Library Technologies Group (a team of developers and system administrators responsible for the library’s technical infrastructure). Prior to this position, he served as Director of the Arts & Humanities Resource Center at Dartmouth, a facility providing pedagogical and technical support for faculty. Before moving to northern New England, Anthony was an Academic Technology Coordinator at Clark University in Massachusetts, and at Minnesota State University – Akita in Japan. His current interests are digital signage, gaming in the curriculum, and the expanded role of students as media creators. Outside of the academy, he has served on the boards of the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District in Spencer,
Massachusetts, and the Old Church Theater in Bradford, Vermont, where he was Secretary. He is active in local theater and in Harmony Night, a community a cappella chorus. Anthony holds a B.A. in Television/Radio from Southern Methodist University and an M.A. in Japanese from the University of Texas at Austin.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: Working in higher education for over twenty years, I have had many opportunities to participate in a variety of professional organizations. The CCUMC is one of only two where I felt like I was part of a professional family from the first experience—a feeling that is reaffirmed at each annual conference. I'm running for the position of Secretary in order to give back to the organization. I served on the Government Regulation and Public Policy Committee from 2012-2015 and co-presented the CCUMC webinar “Copyright Updates for the Digital Age” in February 2014. I have presented at each of the past three conferences and led the Special Interest Group discussions on Instructional Design issues at each of those conference. While I am certain that there is still much for me to learn from peers in the organization, I feel that professionally I am at a stage in my career that I can contribute meaningfully to the organization and serve responsibly in a leadership role. I look forward to meeting more members and welcoming new members into the fold as we work to carry out the mission of the CCUMC for years to come.

Institutional Director Nominees (Two seats available)

 

Mike Baskett, University of Washington

Mike is in his third year as a member of the University of Washington’s Classroom Technology & Events department, which is responsible for the design, programming, installation and maintenance of learning technology in classrooms and events. Mike began his journey through higher education as the Preventative Maintenance Manager for the evening technical support team and quickly raised through the ranks and is now the Manager of Technical Services. Currently Mike and his team manage and maintain technology in 322 classroom, event and conference spaces across the UW campus. Although Mike’s time in higher education is brief, his involvement in audio, video and automation technology is expansive. 18 years ago Mike started a professional sound rental company where he provided sound reinforcement for 1000’s of bars, clubs and private events all over the Northwest. Mike then dove into the world of home theater and automation, working for Definitive Audio, the largest high-end home theater company in the area. While working in home theater, Mike honed his skills in leadership, project management and preventative maintenance, specific to technology. In his last position before entering higher education, Mike was the installation manager for a small firm that specialized in custom technology solutions for high end residential home theaters and commercial conference spaces. Mike has attended the CEDIA, NAMM and INFOCOMM conferences in addition to CCUMC, where he has been attending and presenting for the last two years.  

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I'm excited to be nominated for the board of directors of CCUMC. I have attended many conferences and trade shows in the 15+ years I've been in the audio, video and automation field and have never felt at home as much as I do with CCUMC. My goal as the Institutional Director is to expand the feeling of acceptance and inclusiveness that I have encountered, to the next generation of technology managers, supervisors and technicians. This organization has so much to offer in terms of professional development, manufacturer training and networking with peers from other amazing Universities, and I want to be a part of growing that family. I look forward to the opportunity to work on committees, grow the CCUMC membership, build friendships and expand my knowledge in higher-education teaching and learning technologies. Currently, I sit on the board of directors for a non-profit banked track roller derby league that empowers women in sport by teaching health, athleticism, sporting-conduct, competition and community involvement. My time on this board has given me insight into what it takes to help drive and direct an organization, opened my eyes regarding logistical difficulties and drove home the importance of being objective when difficult decisions need to be made. Although my time in higher education may be considered short compared to others, my knowledge of technology, my history of leadership and mentorship and my experience with another board of directors will allow me to be much more than a participant, but a leader within CCUMC.

Joe Brennan, Pomona College

Joe is the Director of Media and Classroom support services at Pomona College. He provides leadership in classroom technology design and for college event support. Currently, Joe oversees the design, purchasing and maintenance of over 180 spaces including presentation, performance and sports spaces. He also oversees streaming services and digital signage. Additionally, his team provides support for over 1500 event request per year. He has been in this position for 14 years.

Prior to this, Joe was the music technician and recording engineer for the Pomona College department
of music providing support for two electronic computer labs, recording facilities and concert technical
production. He has three nationally released recordings.

Joe has served on numerous College committees and outside of work has served on two non-profit
boards. He is currently serving as the Treasurer on the Portico Homeowners Association.

Joe holds an MFA in music composition from the California institute of the Arts where he studied both
acoustic composition and computer music. His chamber music has been performed throughout the US.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: In my 20 years of being involved in higher education I’ve participated in many “birds of a feather” conferences and I feel as if CCUMC has been the most important conference I’ve attended. I’m a great listener and I strive to be a thoughtful and empathetic colleague. It would be my pleasure to serve as an institutional director to CCUMC and to bring a private liberal arts perspective to the Board.

Scott Deetz, Cedarville University

Scott Deetz is currently in his 19th year at Cedarville University. He started as the first AV Services Technician on campus in the fall of 1999. The Dean of Library Services promoted him to AV Services Manager in the spring of 2001. When Scott started as AV Services Manager, 36 classrooms had permanent AV technology installed. Today as the fall of 2017, there are 188 classrooms, labs, conference rooms and digital signage systems on campus.

Scott served as a member of the Board of Director for the Crestron Owners Group (COG) for almost 2 years. The directors were responsible to schedule a meeting at InfoComm (AVIXA) expo each year and schedule a couple of webinars each year. Scott is currently serving on the CCUMC Professional Development Committee.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST:  The Director of Media Services at Cedarville University, Carl Brandon (retired) introduced me to CCUMC. My first conference was in Kansas City 2008 when Carl asked me to be part of a panel discussion on Tips and Tricks. I instantly “fell in love” with CCUMC. Not only did I get useful information about management, policies, procedures, and technology, I have built friendships with colleagues at other institutions. At the 2015 Pittsburg conference, a board member asked if I was interested in being a part of the Professional Development Committee. I find serving this committee a real enjoyment. At the 2017 Notre Dame conference, I asked if I would be interested in serving on the board of directors as an institutional member. CCUMC is the one conference that I look forward to every year. I would enjoy serving you on the board and seeing CCUMC continue to grow.

Karen Ethier, Roger Williams University

Karen Ethier is the Director of Support Services for the Department of Information Technologies at Roger Williams University. Her current areas of oversight include desktop support, helpdesk and classroom and event support (the department formerly known as “Media Services”). Prior to this role, she served as an AV technician, Assistant Director of Media Services, and Director of Media Services at RWU. Karen has worked in the educational technology field for 20 years, beginning as a student worker in IT at the University of Rhode Island. Karen has a BA in Sociology from the University of Rhode Island and a MA in Teaching from Roger Williams University. She also holds CTS certification.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST:  I attended my first CCUMC event in 2000 at Northeastern University and have found the organization to be an invaluable resource ever since. In my early years at RWU, I was the only full time staff member in the AV department and the CCUMC listserv served as my major connection to others in the field. It was where I went each morning when I turned on my computer, where I learned about new developments in the fast-changing field, and where I reached out when I couldn’t resolve a problem on my own. I have attended 7 CCUMC annual conferences over the last 12 years and will never forget my first one in Portland in 2005 because it was the first time that I met other women who did my job!

The experiences and conversations I had at the conferences over the years gave me the confidence to push myself further and to take on roles that I may not have had I not been encouraged by my fellow CCUMC members. I am excited at the possibility of serving on the Board of Directors and giving back to an organization that has supported and bolstered my career for nearly two decades. I believe that my strength and interest in leadership development could help others to gain the experiences and confidence to also take on new roles and responsibilities, and otherwise advance in their careers.

Kevin Jahnke, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee

Kevin Jahnke is currently the Manager of Classroom Services at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee and has been with UWM for over 20 years in progressively responsible roles in addition to completion of both BA and MLIS degrees through UWM. In his current position he is responsible for technology oversight of 170 General Assignment Classrooms, 4 full time staff and 15 students. This position requires a combination of planning, purchasing, programming, and design as well as leadership responsibility for the team.

Kevin is affiliated with CCUMC, UBTech and InfoComm (AVIXA) as a member of the Technology Manager’s Council as well as the UW-System Educational Media Technology Council and UW-System Lead IT group. Additionally, Kevin has completed the InfoComm (AVIXA) CTS and Crestron DMC-E certifications and attends industry events, workshops and conferences regularly.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: As a relatively new member of CCUMC I have quickly found the organization to be very relevant to my role at UWM. Utilizing the resources and connections available through CCUMC my ability to provide effective leadership for the planning of and implementation of classroom technology throughout campus has improved by leveraging a professional organization. After attending the last two CCUMC conferences I would like to increase my involvement with the organization and hopefully contribute to its overall success.

Katie Kassof, American University

Katie Kassof is the Instructional Technologist and Learning Space Designer at American University. She works with the Planning Office as well as the Registrar to design new classroom technology as well as organize the enterprise classroom modernization plan. In addition to design, she also acts as the technical PM on most AV projects at the university, works on selecting and implementing new
instructional technology tools, and provides AV support at high profile University events. She has worked in the AV department in various technical roles since 2009. Prior to that she provided LMS and software support and training, and planned teaching conferences and workshops. She has an MFA in Film and Electronic Media specializing in documentary cinematography and a Graduate Certificate in Curriculum and Instruction focusing on science education.

Outside of work, Katie has many diverse hobbies including peal bell ringing, photography, hiking and
camping, home improvement, gardening, baking, and cooking. She's also an avid reader and barely uses her high-tech AV setup at home.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I have been a member of CCUMC for the past 6 years and really value what the organization does and how much guidance they have provided. Attending the presenting at the conferences and participating in the webinars always re-invigorates me and sparks my creativity. Being a member of the Professional Development Committee for the past 2 years and now being co-chair of the committee has given me the opportunity to help bring some of my excitement to the rest of the CCUMC community.

Joining the board would be a great honor as it would allow me to give back to the CCUMC community even more. I also really love our membership and having the opportunity to be more involved would be a pleasure.

Matthew "Q" McQuaig, Santa Rosa College

Q is Director of Media Services & Learning Technologies at Santa Rosa Junior College (CA); before trekking to the west coast, he served previously as Director of Media Services for Grove City College (PA). Over the past 15 years, he has led rapidly evolving teams to expand their broad array of creative and technical services, help transition each institution from analog to digital realms, and support collaboration across campuses in dedicated service to faculty and students. Committed to lifelong learning, he sought and earned his Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) degree from Geneva College and encourages his talented team members to pursue professional development in their diverse roles. 

Among those growth opportunities, Q realized the numerous benefits of CCUMC early in his career and
has been a proud member for over a decade, gaining tremendous value from the organization. He was
honored to co-host the 2015 annual conference in Pittsburgh, in tandem with the all-star committee from
Duquesne, PITT, Westminster and GCC. He spearheaded efforts to implement and design the first-ever
interactive Guidebook for CCUMC, which has become a popular tool for many attendees at subsequent
conferences in 2016 (San Antonio) and 2017 (Notre Dame).

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: It has been a privilege to sit on CCUMC's board of directors over the past two years, forging new relationships and representing our dedicated institutional members as we head into an exciting new chapter. I am happy to continue serving in this way for a second term as our membership sees fit. Regardless of whether I am re-elected as an institutional director, I plan to continue investing my time and energy into this great organization!

Scott Menter, University of Nevada Las Vegas

Scott Menter is currently in his 8th year as Manager of Classroom Technology Services at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Classroom Technology Services is part of Instructional Technology Services under the Office of Information Technology. Prior to UNLV, he worked for Louisiana State University managing their Distance Education suites and Classroom Technology, worked Louisiana Department of Education Center for Educational Technology as an Educational Technology Consultant, and Louisiana School for the Deaf as their Media Specialist. Altogether, Scott has been working with AV technology and Education since 1986. Scott has experienced the evolution of educational technology first hand. Scott currently holds BS in Vocational Education from LSU, AVIXA CTS and Crestron DMC-E certifications.

Scott ensures that UNLV’s learning spaces that have audiovisual technologies permanently installed
(approximately 387 plus spaces on campus) are appropriately designed, supported and maintained
ensuring minimal downtime. Scott and his technology team has been featured several manufacturer
case studies, trade magazines, and presented at national conferences. Personally, Scott enjoys traveling, beaches and grandchildren.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: It would be an honor to serve in a leadership position to help advance the body of knowledge that currently exists within the field of educational technology. The people of CCUMC organization has been instrumental for me for staying current with the technology trends in higher education and in developing a comprehensive AV department at UNLV. In 2012, UNLV hosted the CCUMC Annual Conference. I was the conference technical liaison for that conference and the 2013 conference in Chicago. CCUMC and its members has been at the heart of my career and I would like to make my own contribution to the organization.

Jeff Rhind, Suffolk University

Jeff Rhind is the Associate Director of University Media Services (UMS) at Suffolk University in Boston. Although, the university is comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Sawyer Business School as well as Suffolk University Law School, UMS is a centralized department under the Information Technology Services umbrella. UMS consists of 8 full-time employees that provide an extremely high level of personal service to faculty, staff, administration and students in over 200+ classroom, meeting and event spaces on an urban campus setting of 9 buildings. During his 10 years at Suffolk, Jeff has overseen the construction of new general purpose classroom spaces as well as other areas ensuring that the technology needs of the University are best met both in terms technology integration, usability, and fiscal awareness. He is actively involved in seeking out and testing new technologies and how such deployments can be best utilized by the Suffolk community. Jeff works closely with other departments managing the logistics of special events from Commencement activities, to Open Houses and Showcases, to special speaking engagements by the University President, it's Trustees as well as the Mayor, State Attorney General, and Governor. Prior to working in academia, Jeff was a senior editor and producer at an independent television production company for 23 years creating programming for PBS and other outlets.

Jeff is an active member of his community where he is on the Board of Trustees for his local library. He is a single father with a 20 year old son and a 9 year old daughter. He is also an avid board gamer with over 150 games in his ever growing collection. He also loves football and is a die-hard New England Patriots fan.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I have been member of the CCUMC for many years and getting the opportunity to interact with its members has helped me immeasurably in technologies and initiatives we enact here at Suffolk. I feel I always have so much more to learn everyday from my peers here in the region and around the country. As an Institutional Director, I want to contribute back to the industry, and more importantly, to the the people of this industry during this challenging and difficult time for us in academia. I am excited and hopeful in the possibility of furthering my service to this industry and to the CCUMC. After the past ten years, I hope to offer my knowledge and experience at Suffolk University as a helpful and worthwhile addition to the CCUMC Board of Directors.

Dave Test, Penn State University

Dave is the Manager for Technology Enhanced Learning Spaces at Penn State, overseeing the groups that support the 420 classrooms and 109 Lab and collaboration spaces at the University Park Campus. He is the technical lead for Penn State’s student response system (clickers) as well as the University’s wireless collaboration initiative. Dave helped cofound  the MacAdmins Conference at Penn State. The annual event, now in its eighth year, brings nearly 600 Mac and iOS system administrators to Penn State to share knowledge and expertise on deploying and managing Macs and iOS devices. He has presented at CCUMC in 2014 and 2015, as well as at MacWorld and MacIT. Dave is passionate about photography and vintage computing, with a particular love for Commodore and Amiga computers.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I am honored to be nominated as an Institutional Director for CCUMC. In my career in higher education, I've learned time and again the value of sharing knowledge with peers, and I can think of no single organization that has enabled that for me more than CCUMC. As AV and IT continue to collide into a singular service, this group's efforts to provide a forum for information exchange, and professional development opportunities to network and sharpen our skills, will become more important than ever. At Penn State, I've had the privilege of being on the forefront of learning space transformation, and have been able to implement technologies and services that have improved learning outcomes and enriched the learning experiences for our students and instructors. In my role as co-founder of the MacAdmins Conference, I've worked with the team to take our annual event from a small gathering to the largest independent Apple-focused IT conference in the world. I look forward to directing my experiences in learning technologies and professional development planning to benefit CCUMC to the best of my abilities.

Scott Tiner, Bates College

As a trained educator, graduating from the Boston University School of Education, Scott is very interested in the integration of technology and education. Scott currently works at Bates College managing the Client Services portions of Information Technology. Scott directs the Service Desk which is responsible for the support of all classrooms and computers on campus. Scott also oversees the campus training programs and specifies and purchases computing equipment for the campus. He stays very active in the AV and IT fields, having presented at both regional, national and international conferences. Scott writes columns and blogs regularly for rAVe Publications.

In order to continue to develop and strengthen his leadership and
management skills Scott has attended the Management Institute and the Leading Change Institute, sponsored by EduCause. He earned his MBA from the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics, at the University of New Hampshire. During his time in graduate school Scott developed an interest and expertise in leadership and team building.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I am interested in serving as an Institutional Director for CCUMC because I have witnessed the skills and knowledge of the CCUMC community. I attended and presented at the 2016 CCUMC Conference in San Antonio, and was struck by the quality of presentations, and the value gained by networking with colleagues. There are no other organizations that bring together audio visual people that work in higher education as well as CCUMC does.

I believe that my experiences in managing AV and IT groups could be beneficial to the board, and to the larger organization. I am very interested in helping the organization continue to move forward, grow in membership and put on excellent conferences. Additionally, I would love to take part in many of the new initiatives (Catalyst series, for example) that CCUMC has been starting.

Joe Tobares, University of Texas at San Antonio

Joe Tobares currently serves as the Director of Learning Technologies and Enterprise Managed Customer Solutions for the Office of Information Technology (OIT) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He is responsible for leading the operation, support and advancement of technology in learning spaces and desktop solutions on campus. Tobares earned his Masters of Education in Instructional Technology from UTSA and has 16 years of experience in higher education classroom technology support and management. Tobares specializes in technology design for classroom and learning spaces. He researches new and innovative technology to advance the learning process and explores how it can assist with various pedagogies in different disciplines.

In addition, Tobares also oversees technology solutions for all desktop computing at UTSA which include image creation, software licensing, emergency notification tools, systems reporting, incident and service request tracking and desktop data backup. He is dedicated to understanding the university’s business goals and providing solutions that help keep UTSA moving forward. Tobares has presented at numerous conferences and events, served on project and conference committees, and been appointed to numerous product development boards because of his expertise in the technology field.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I am honored to be nominated as a potential Institutional Director on the CCUMC Board of Directors. Since attending my first conference in Kansas, CCUMC has always held a special place in my heart. Not only do we get to share our experiences (and frustrations) but also it is wonderful to visit with the lifelong friends we have made throughout the organization. Being a part of this organization is truly an awesome experience and I would like to give back to this group as much as I have been given. If nominated, I will work my hardest to further our group and grow our CCUMC family.

Joey Wall, Marist College

Joey holds a BFA in Communication from New York Institute of Technology and an MS in Information Technology from Marist College. Joey began her career in New York City as a Production Coordinator for Practising Law Institute, a nonprofit continuing legal education organization. Her area offered technical supported for live seminars and produced multimedia materials for sale. Joey eventually moved to New York’s Hudson River Valley when she accepted a position at Marist College in Poughkeepsie serving as Media Center Manager. In 2002 she was promoted to Director and holds that position today. Under her direction, the Marist College Media Center’s services include providing multimedia support for classes and events, managing production facilities, distributing equipment for loan, evaluating and implementing new instructional technologies, supporting online courses, and producing a variety of video and audio content for the college. At Marist, Joey serves on Marist’s Marketing Communication Group, is a lead on the Commencement committee, and is a member of the Advisory Committee for Marist’s Professional Women’s Mentorship Program. Other professional interests include Operational Planning and Copyright. Joey lives near Woodstock, New York, with her husband and two daughters. She enjoys the outdoors, exercise, music, reading, and cooking.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST: I am interested in continuing to serve on the CCUMC Board of Directors as an Institutional Board Member because it is a great honor to represent this group of professionals. I am a proud member of CCUMC because of the professional expertise and comradery so sincerely shared among members. Our mission is “to provide leadership and a forum for information exchange…” and I often reflect upon my appreciation for a group from which I learn so much and to which I might make a valuable contribution.

I have been active in CCUMC for a decade and have volunteered in many ways. I have been part of Conference Planning (including Quicktakes, Video Awards, and Proceedings Editor), the Finance Committee, the Strategic Planning Task Force, was Interest Group Coordinator, and am currently Chair of the Marketing Communication Task Force.

I bring passion for the work we do, dedication to my teammates, and enthusiasm to share ideas. I believe that my knowledge, skills, and abilities have been an asset to CCUMC as a Board member. I so very much would like to see through the projects with which I’ve been associated.
