Conference Session Report

The Emerging Technologies Interest Group met for breakfast discussions on Friday, October 19, 8:00-9:00 am, Saturday, October 20, 8:00-9:00 and Sunday, October 21, 9:00-10:00. The topics were similar to what is often discussed on the CCUMC listserv but with the immediacy of face to face conversations. I need to give special thanks to Lisa Stephens for her help with notes on Friday’s session.

During the Friday meeting 50-60 members attended and listed the following topics to possibly be discussed during the three sessions:

1)    Digital signage and network
a.    Self contained signage units? Samsung?

2)    HD migration (Darbyshire is holding a Monday general session)
a.    Price point on HD is coming down, can start to buy 16x9 screens
b.    Shift to digital TV (FCC compliance)
c.    (role of satellite and DTV)
d.    We’re cabled VGA, and now projectors are being shipped without VGA
e.    How many are moving to Cat 5 at this point? Low response
f.    HDMI – are you using it?  Is it a throwaway?  (Susan, it didn’t carry audio in our home unit)
g.    HDMI and DRM
h.    HD vs. Blue Ray (Beta vs. VHS)
i.    A few have deployed Blue Ray
j.    Samsung has a dual HD/Blue Ray for 1K

3)    Campus Communication Systems (emergency alert systems)

i.    Mac with a device that’s connected to classroom in the room.  Some integration challenges.
n.    Jeff Donohue: When students were polled, they said they didn’t need to talking head, so it saved a ton on infrastructure
o.    Discussion on primary instruction vs. tutorial/review – for what purpose is the capture?  If it’s primary instruction, better production values are desirable
p.    Special Event archives – for university events.  DL departments manage large event capture, and are called in for special events, but that’s different than everyday classroom captures
