JOHN BOWLBY: ATTACHMENT THEORY ACROSS GENERATIONS:
Dr. John Bowlby’s understanding of attachment relationships and their
enormous impact on lives throughout the entire life cycle has become
basic to the study of developmental and clinical psychology. Shot both
in London where Bowlby spent his working life and in New York City where
therapists are using his therapeutic approach with adult clients, this
film gives an overview of the scope of his contributions. The film
includes footage from an on-going longitudinal study, documenting the
secure attachment history of a boy at one year, six years and now as an
appealing twenty-year old university student. Touching segments from
therapy sessions with adults who have had troubled attachment histories
illustrate Bowlby’s approach to psychotherapy.
A complimentary film to MARY AINSWORTH: ATTACHMENT AND THE GROWTH OF
LOVE, this film also illustrates assessment procedures basic to an
understanding of attachment theory: the Strange Situation and Adult
Attachment Interview. Attachment theory had its roots in Bowlby’s wide
ranging intellectual interests, his openness to the work of others and
his own personal history, all of which is discussed in this film by him,
his colleagues and his adult children. (2007) 39 minutes $250
